Woodberry's cloisters

arts & entertainment

Are you aware of the current issues facing Woodberry and the surrounding areas today? As many of you may know, Loyola has a proposal to buy 50 acres of city owned land, and 19 acres of Sinai owned land in Woodberry Forest, an undeveloped area of about 100 acres that is currently in a natural state with some beautiful mature forests, although part of it was the site of a dump many years ago. Other proposals include the purchase of 26 acres by MTA, where they plan on building a 4 acre parking lot near the unused BGE natural gas tank for the Cold Spring light rail station. This parking lot will accomodate approximately 280 cars. Other plans include a parking lot for a high school at Kennedy Krieger Institute on Greenspring Ave., and proposals for senior citizen housing and group homes. Another concern is the dumping of sewage into the Jones Falls by the city. This development will definitely impact the neighborhood, so read on and learn more about these proposals.

Woodberry Planning Committee
Many groups have different opinions on the best use of the open space. The Urban Forest Initiative believes that with the steady decline in city residents and the growing number of vacant lots, city residents should have natural open spaces to enjoy, not more development. They would like to minimize the impact of any development that occurs there and create trails, a tree nursery, and opportunities for community service through stewardship. The Urban Forest Initiative also hopes to bring environmental issues back to Baltimore, in part by encouraging the enforcement of current dumping and pollution laws.

The Jones Falls Valley master plan, a different proposal, is a preliminary statement about their beliefs on how the whole Jones Falls valley should be developed. Their plans do include Loyola's stadium and some trails in the woods, as well as a potential green fund. Plans also include the construction of an unspecified number of houses in Druid Hill park, removing Druid Hill park from the city's control, and redevelopment of Falls road between Meadow Mill and Maryland Ave. If you want to get a copy of the plan, please contact AB associates at 410-547-6900, or click here to e-mail them.

Fact: Baltimore's population is down 14% since 1990, and open space is one of the major factors that is drawing citizens away.
